SEXUAL JOURNEY THROUGH MIDLIFE: THE MALE CLIMACTERIC
Men also experience changes with midlife. These changes result from a decrease in testosterone production. A man’s hormones are actually at their peak when he is 17 to 20 years old. When a man reaches his 40s, he may start to experience a decline in sexual responsiveness.
These changes are more likely to be caused by stress and anxiety than they are by age. It might take him longer to develop an erection. He might require more direct genital stimulation during foreplay in order to get an erection. In addition, the angle of his erection decreases, and his orgasm becomes slightly less intense.
Kegel exercises can enhance orgasm for men. However, for many men there is no perceptible decline in erection or ejaculation until the 60s or later. Testosterone supplements may be helpful for some men, but side effects include decreased size of the penis and testicles as well as hair loss.
There are physical changes as well. The penis, testicles, and scrotum all decrease in size. The prostate gland becomes larger and can interfere with the flow of urine. Smaller amounts of semen are produced. But the sperm in the semen is still perfectly capable of fertilizing an egg. Men can cause pregnancy regardless of their age.
